OUR EXPERTISE
Thompson Design Group is a small sized full-service architectural design firm conveniently located in the center of Southeast Michigan.
We design both commercial and residential projects for both new buildings, additions, and renovations to existing buildings.
For commercial projects, our process begins with meeting with the client and understanding their project vision by defining the scope of work, program of spaces, and the size/functionality/relationship of each component.
We develop early options that include a space plan, building enclosure concept, level of construction complexity, and architectural building image.
For residential projects, we specialize in both new houses and additions. Our process begins with meeting with the homeowners and seeing their parcel or existing house. Understanding the homeowner’s space program requirements and vision for the new work is essential for successfully developing different solutions.
OUR PROCESS
DEFINE
The initial phase of our architectural work is to clearly understand and define our client’s goals and vision. We define the project’s unique issues, budget, and restrictions such as zoning regulations. This includes define the building code regulations for specific projects and often engage the services of a surveyor for new parcels. For additions and renovations, this includes field-measuring and creating as-built floor plans. This is the research and critical up-front work that establishes the project’s parameters.
DESIGN
This is the creative, brainstorming, solution driven, and often is the most fun part of the overall process. Working with the client’s input and developing options for the best solution. This phase of the process results in a schematic design that documents the project’s plans, elevations, and construction components. On larger projects, this phase includes engineering sub-consultant’s work that parallels the architectural design.
DELIVER
This is the final phase of the design process. We produce clear, concise, and detailed architectural construction documents that can be used for bidding, permit, and construction. All the necessary information required is included in the final documents. This high quality set of construction documents is essential for the project to be successfully translated into built form.
